Usually within the discipline of pattern design, the outcomes themselves tend to be not only two-dimensional, but also designed through two-dimensional means, such as a pen and paper or a mouse and digital interface. However, with this installation prototype, we aim to challenge this with the design and development of a prototype that generates spatial patterns in a three-dimensional way.

As many of the trends within embodied interaction point towards harnessing intuitive bodily movements as actors, we employed a gesture sensor for this scaled-down installation prototype with both the speed and direction of a gesture deriving and translating patterns through a dynamic spatial interface.

With less than one week to produce and demo a working prototype, we rapidly designed and fabricated the plexiglass housing for the kinetic system down to the last technical details, requiring even a few meticulous refinements such as shaving a millimeter or two off several screwheads.

The final result was a 300 x 300mm transparent cube with five rows of plexiglass panels. All of these rows were motorized and controlled by the sensor that translates the gestural movement above it into actionable operations for the kinetic system to follow, creating a dynamic interplay between body and space.

Both the direction in which the user swipes (whether from left-right or right-left) as well as the speed he or she swipes is factored into the behavior of the motors, delivering a diverse visual output that continuously changes based on the individual interaction of the user.
